Discovered in 1784 by William Herschel, NGC 6992 - NGC 6995, the eastern segment of the Veil Nebula, is one of the most beautiful supernova remnants (SNR's) in the sky. The central segment of the Veil, NGC 6974 & NGC 6979, also known as Pickering's Triangular Wisp, can be seen in the lower right corner of the image. The nebula is thought to have exploded roughly 30-40 thousand years ago.
